Since we have been talking so much about the role of objectivity in photography, I thought it was also worth mentioning this same idea in writing. Especially writing for mass media. The responsibility for writing "objectively" and presenting a clear, unbiased picture is enormous, considering that for most people this is the main tool for receiving information. It can sway a person to form stances on all kinds of issues, both domestic and international, from abortion, education, healthcare, and war. That being said, it can also be a very dangerous tool if the ultimate objective is not always to present the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I often ponder just how objective an article can be, when the picture, language, tone, and selection of information can all fall very easily into the subjective. In any case, I think it is wise to not to be spoonfed what is going on in the world, and to refer to a number of sources. This image takes the idea to the extreme, suggesting that corporate media is in fact simply a form of mind control. I think that the reader should be sensitive to this possibility, and understand that as with everything else, not to take everything at face value.
